Guest Blog – Why & How to try CrossFit
Hello to all you lovely gymandcocoa followers! First of all, I just want to say a massive thank you to gymandcocoa aka Lozzy for inviting me to blog all about my current training/form of exercise and why I love it so much! So I absolutely jumped at the chance to get my ‘blog on’ and share my CrossFit story so far!!!
How I Started CrossFit
I started CrossFit earlier this year in April. Previously I had been training at a gym doing both cardio and weight-based group classes, and over 14 months I lost 4 stone dropped a few dress sizes and used exercise as my therapy/escape from life (Mental Health > Physical Appearance). But since the turn of the year, I started to feel a bit bored in my training sessions and no matter how hard I tried I’d lost my mojo and I was forcing myself to go as I knew I had to. So I started looking around at new places to train. Enter Crossfit…one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life! I found a place called CrossFit Gaia based in the North East of England (check them out on FB/Insta). It was easy for me to get to both from home and work and I knew a few people who already went there.
I had previously done a free trial session there in November so I kind knew the principles and structure. But before I could get fully stuck in and book into classes I had to go through an OnRAMP session, Where we went through all the Olympic Lifting, Gymnastic and other movements and skills I would come across in sessions. Then it was time to book into some sessions!
A typical day at a CrossFit gym
The sessions at Gaia are normally split into two parts; we’ll normally start with a strength or skill component such as Overhead Squats or Ring muscle ups! FYI Overhead Squats are my ultimate fav!
Then after that, we move on to the WOD (Workout of the day)
So an example session –
Overhead squat – 5 sets of 3 reps at 90% 1RM.
WOD for time –
400m Run then
15 Hang Power Snatch
5 Ring/Bar Muscle Ups
10 Hang Power Snatch
10 Chest to Bars
5 Hang Power Snatch
15 Pull Ups
WODS are either for time, AMRAP or EMOM. (Check me out using all the CrossFit lingo). Also before I started I actually looked up a CrossFit terminology page so I had a brief idea of what people were talking about *inserts facepalm emoji*. Now if you’re looking at that WOD and thinking there is no way I could do that, then never fear Scaling is here! All CrossFit workouts can be scaled, and believe me, I’m still scaling a lot of the weights and movements but the sense of achievement that comes when you manage the next progression is unreal!
Why I love CrossFit
So now to the most important part of this blog; why I love CrossFit!
• It makes me happy. I literally run out of work to get to Gaia!
• The people and sense of belonging to a community. Like I said previously I’ve only trained at Gaia for roughly 3 months but from day 1 I felt so welcomed and I’ve already made some amazing friends there! I actually felt really lonely in life before I joined CrossFit but I don’t have those feelings anymore!
• The training is a little bit of me, aka one hundred percent my type of training on paper. I love lifting heavy weights, being pushed to my absolute limits in WODS, learning new skills and progressing up the scaling options. That feeling when you power clean a weight you were unable to a couple of weeks
back – AMAZING.
I honestly don’t feel I can put down in words how much finding CrossFit means to me, how happy it makes me and how it has enhanced my life in both terms or mental health and physical appearance!
If you have any questions about CrossFit send me DM on Instagram @beth_will and I’ll happily answer them. Also, I’ve got a fair few CrossFit posts and story highlights to follow my CrossFit journey!
And why not go try out a session at your local CrossFit and see what all the fuss is about…
